Rat-Man was created by a coven of witches who had been wronged by King Stephen of Blois. They created him by enchanting a rat and merging the enchanted rat with a drifter who had stumbled upon their coven and been trapped. The man forgot who he was, with only the Rat-Man identity remaining, and the witches tasked him with "righting the wrong that had befallen them". During the reign of King Stephen, Rat-Man the Goblin King was a fierce adversary and a serious threat to the crown, becoming ruler of another gang of outcasts, the goblin people of Smethwickshire. He conducted several raids against the king's men, but despite being a formidable opponent, his own nature led to his downfall. The people of England detested him so much that they became united behind the king against Rat-Man, sending Rat-Man and his people into hiding underground.
Rat-Man continued to rule over his goblin people over the centuries, unable to die due to the Witches' spells preventing him from ageing until his task is complete. Over the centuries it became impossible for him to complete his tasks after King Stephen and even the witches themselves became dust to time. Cursed to wander the earth forever, Rat-Man got a taste for power and continued to build his army of goblins underground, in the plans of one day returning to the service and conquering the land.
